bartholin cysts are common. in most cases, they are NOT associated with STD. the duct is microscopic! it does not take much to cause it to clog up, so to speak, and cause a cyst. cysts are not an indication of infection, and may be just a back up of the good ol' lubricant our body produces.

bartholin abscess, however, is often related to bacteria and is appropriately described as infection festering inside the clogged duct/cyst.

the treatment you described is actually catheterization rather than marsupialization. this is usually the first course of treatment (other than plain old lancing of the cyst or abscess). np/doc will cut a slit in the cyst/abscess and insert the word catheter (held in place by a small balloon inside the cyst); the catheter stays in place for up to four weeks and facilitates continued drainage of the cyst/abscess and allows for a larger opening to form at the catheter insertion site.

marsupialization may take place if the word catheter is not effective. np/doc cuts an oval out of the cyst site and opens out the skin (turns the cyst inside out almost) and stitches this to the surrounding area. this allows the fluid to drain and with luck provides an outlet for future secretions so that other abscesses do not form.

Yup. Kind of like saliva glands, only the secretions produce are muskier.

But I guess that depends on the person. Some people have really bad breath.

kinda like the saliva glands in your mouth. an ex gf got one of these cyst one time and freaked out. she made me inspect it for my 'expert' opinion... i told her to go to the doctor and get it checked out. they didn't have to change her into a kangaroo though(a marsupial!)... although i spend a lot of time in her 'pouch' :P
